Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This study analyzes differences between expert judgments based on physical inspection and image-based
evaluations in order to extract reusable materials for clothes remaking from clothing scheduled for disposal.
Among 1,092 used clothes collected in 2023, 520 items classified as discarded (recycled) were examined. While sorting experts made comprehensive decisions using sensory information such as touch and odor, the author assessed reuse potential based on images alone. As a result, partial reuse potential was identified in approximately 45% (235items) of the discarded clothes.
The evaluation statements were classified into three categories based on vocabulary and expression: (1) sensory-based descriptions of hygienic or critical damage, (2) references to social attributes that compromise material anonymity, and (3) descriptions of common damage or deterioration.
Experiments using a vision–language model (Sarashina2.2-Vision-3B) showed relatively reasonable validity in identifying surface-level features such as stains and discoloration, whereas issues remained regarding the overgeneralization of causal inference and the recognition of structural damage. This study organizes expert perspectives and highlights the potential of VLM-based damage recognition for clothes remaking applications.
