In recent years, studies that use field sensing to measure audience physiological responses and subjective evaluations in theaters have become more common. However, most of these studies have reported resulting synchrony. To elucidate the mechanism generating collective emotion, this study aims to quantify the propagation of emotion through audience member interactions during theater performances. During the experiment, audience members used their mobile devices to respond with a binary value indicating their self-perceived laughter during ten pairs of performances (manzai, comedy sketch, and monologue). This allowed us to obtain a time series of second-by-second laughter. We then approximated the input intensity from each performer using the audience's average laughter frequency and quantified the inter-audience interaction between any adjacent audience pair using transfer entropy. Our analysis revealed strong audience interaction in the two performances where the input intensity from each performer was moderate. This result can be interpreted as follows: when the common input is strong, laughter occurs solely due to the input itself. However, when the common input is moderate, individuals become more dependent on the influence of the surrounding audience's laughter. Furthermore, when the input is weak, the frequency of laughter is low, suggesting that audience interaction via laughter has minimal effect. These findings suggest that the performance alters not only the response patterns of individual audience members but also the dynamics of emotional propagation. |
