In high-capacity optical communication systems, variations in laser characteristics can cause severe degradation in signal quality. Therefore, continuous monitoring of laser characteristics under actual transmission conditions is an important issue. Conventionally, laser characterization is performed by directly analyzing the continuous-wave output of the laser. However, applying such techniques to practical optical networks is difficult. In this paper, we propose a digital-signal-processing-based method for continuously monitoring laser characteristics under transmission conditions. The proposed method extracts laser characteristics from digital signal processing data in the receiver. This enables laser monitoring without additional hardware. The effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed through numerical simulations and transmission experiments using 100 Gbaud dual-polarization quadrature phase-shift keying signals over transmission distances exceeding 1,000 km. |
