Neural Correlates of Music-Induced Awe: An Investigation of EEG Power and Functional Connectivity

(in English) Music listening is known to evoke a wide range of emotions. This study focuses on awe, a self-transcendent emotion accompanied by feelings of reverence and being moved, and aims to elucidate its neural basis and the influence of music sensitivity using psychophysical experiments and electroencephalography (EEG). Participants listened to self-selected music while EEG was recorded and reported the moments at which they subjectively experienced awe. Time–frequency analysis revealed a pronounced suppression of alpha-band power at the reported moments of awe. Connectivity analysis further demonstrated right-hemisphere-dominant functional connectivity during these experiences. When participants were grouped according to music sensitivity, differences emerged in both the spatial distribution of alpha-power suppression and connectivity patterns. Specifically, highly sensitive individuals exhibited more localized neural changes, whereas less sensitive individuals showed more widespread activity modulation. These findings indicate that neural changes associated with awe occur at the moment of subjective awareness and that alpha-band power suppression may serve as an objective neural marker of awe. Moreover, individuals with higher music sensitivity appear to experience awe more efficiently, requiring less extensive neural activation.
