Does Others' Altruistic Behavior Promote Reciprocal Decision-Making? -- An Ultimatum Game Study with an Artificial Agent --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This study investigates the formation of reciprocal altruism in human--agent interaction using the Ultimatum Game, focusing on the process by which individuals infer the generative principles of others' actions. We manipulated two factors in the agent's strategy: the presence of a selfish, egocentric strategy which adhered rigidly to its own policy, and an altruistic, exocentric strategy which adapted to human feedback. The results showed that participants rejected proposals less frequently when the agent adopted the altruistic strategy or did not adopt the selfish strategy. Furthermore, the exocentric strategy increased the perception of safety toward the agent, whereas the presence of the egocentic strategy lowered perception of intelligence. These findings suggest that individual decision-making in negotiation is shaped not only by distributional outcomes but also by inferences regarding others' internal policy, particularly their responsiveness to social signals.
