Daily-use EEG devices require miniaturization and ease of wear, but miniaturization limits the scalp–electrode contact area while accurate signal acquisition remains necessary.
Over hair-covered areas, pin electrodes are often used to reduce hair-related interference; however, partial loss of scalp contact and contact changes due to motion or slippage can increase noise and degrade signal quality.
In this study, we examined a signal-quality improvement method using our previously proposed hair-clip-type EEG device. With contact impedance matched, electrodes with different pin counts were compared, showing that poorly contacting pins increase noise in the 50 Hz band. We then evaluated a multi-electrode design that divides a dense pin array into multiple groups and found that selecting well-contacting electrodes reduces noise and improves signal-to-noise ratio and temporal stability. Overall, subdividing the contact area enables robust electrode selection and, with optional signal processing, improves signal quality in hair-clip-type EEG devices. |
