This paper reports a stduy on a novel transport communication mechanism designed to achieve throughput beyond 100 Gbps over long-distance networks while suppressing CPU consumption. As Ethernet link speeds continue to increase beyond 100 Gbps and 400 Gbps, packet-per-packet processing has become a major bottleneck on general-purpose servers, and it is difficult to fully utilize such high-bandwidth links. To address this issue, we propose a new transport communication mechanism in which fixed-length ring buffers are preallocated in main memory for transmitting and receiving data, and the NIC directly reads application data from the TX ring buffer and packetizes it for transmission. We implemented a prototype of the method in software using DPDK and evaluated its throughput. The results show that memory copies for receiving packets are the primary bottleneck in software with existing Ethernet NICs, and that throughput of 400 Gbps is achievable if this bottleneck is mitigated. |
