This paper presents a performance evaluation of people tracking using non-scanning 3D Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensors in a real-world environment. We perform people tracking using kernel density estimation on pedestrian flow data measured at Central International Airport. We evaluate the people tracking performance of the non-scanning 3D ToF sensors by comparison with camera-based people tracking performance. The performance evaluation results indicate that non-scanning 3D ToF sensors can address privacy concerns in real environment that include situations which cannot be replicated in specific scenarios, while potentially achieving people tracking performance equivalent to cameras through algorithm improvements, optimization of installation conditions, and enhancement of the non-scanning 3D ToF sensors themselves. |
