Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Information on the distance to and the direction of a target is essential in many fields, and practical distance sensing technologies are therefore required. In the radar field, a standing-wave radar based on phase interference was proposed by Uebo and is known as a practical method that extracts distance information by applying the Fourier transform twice to the observed signal. The authors have applied this principle to acoustic distance measurement using audible sound and have investigated methods for accurately estimating distances from very short ranges to longer distances. In the course of this study, several results have been obtained, including single-channel ranging, distance estimation using cross-spectral analysis based on multiple adjacent microphone observations, and distance estimation to a sound source by actively exploiting multiple reflections. In this invited lecture, the fundamental principle of acoustic distance measurement is first outlined, followed by an introduction to these methods. The ranging characteristics under noisy environments are also briefly discussed, and a simple implementation on a microcontroller is presented. Finally, future prospects toward practical applications in real environments are addressed.
