Space channel networks (SCNs) have been proposed as a cost-effective and scalable network architecture for the forthcoming space-division multiplexing (SDM) era. A space cross-connect (SXC) is an optical node in the SDM layer of SCNs and provides spatial channel grooming at the core level. In conventional wavelength-division multiplexing networks, various add/drop section architectures have been developed for reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers based on wavelength selective switches, depending on their connection capabilities. In this paper, we focus on SXCs employing core selection switches as fundamental building blocks and discuss architectures of the add/drop section. We also describe the configurations and implementation technologies of newly developed multicore-fiber-based optical switches, namely core selectors and core port selectors, which enable flexible connection capabilities. Furthermore, experimental demonstrations are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed architectures, and recent efforts toward compact and integrated implementations aiming at reducing component count and internal optical wiring are introduced. |
