Quantifying the Discourse Construction Process Based on Rhetorical Structure Theory

(in English) Conventional Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) has focused on describing the static structure of completed discourse, and has not sufficiently addressed the dynamic process by which a reader incrementally constructs that structure along the presentation order. This study proposes a framework that projects a completed RST tree onto a sequential reader-state update series. Specifically, we define a topic reference point, $Topic(t)$, which represents the context the reader is currently referring to, and visualize its trajectory as a waveform, providing a unified description of topic maintenance and recurrence. Application of this framework to the GUM and GENTLE corpora shows that discourse presentation strategies can be quantified as a bipolar pattern between maintenance and short-cycle switching. This method offers a perspective that explains such strategies not in terms of the final structure, but as the dynamics of structure construction.
