Recently, number of valuable automobile thefts are increasing using a special device, called ''CAN invader'', that enables to illegally start the automobile engine and to drive it away. This ''CAN invader'' is a device that can take control of an automobile by sending unauthorized signals through the in-vehicle network, the ''Controller Area Network (CAN)''. To prevent such unauthorized automobile operation via CAN, we propose an intelligent gateway device that can be inserted between a critical in-vehicle device and the CAN. To improve both security against theft and usability, this device learns the car owner's regular behavior, and when the device detects unusual behavior, the gateway requests additional authentication using an external server. We therefore conducted proof-of-principle experiments using an emulated in-vehicle network, an embedded computers, and a briefly implemented intelligent gateway device. As a result, we confirmed the gateway device is effective against theft. In this report, we provide an overview of implementation of this intelligent gateway device, as well as explain the experimental environment including the emulated in-vehicle network, and the experiment. Furthermore, we discuss issues that became apparent during the experiment. |
