We focus on bandwidth-constrained wireless image semantic communication using discrete semantic tokens. An input image is first represented as a 2-D grid of codebook indices by a transformer-based vector-quantized variational autoencoder (T-VQ-VAE). To decide which tokens to transmit under a fixed bit budget, we assign each token a semantic-importance score by combining two complementary cues: (i) reconstruction sensitivity measured by gradients of a perceptual loss, and (ii) structural relevance derived from token-level self-attention, which captures global dependencies. The transmitter then selects and transmits the top-ranked tokens over a wireless link. At the receiver, missing tokens are recovered via masked token completion, followed by a generative refinement stage to enhance details and improve realism. Experiments on the BDD100K dataset demonstrate that, under the same bit budget, the proposed scheme achieves higher CLIP similarity and lower LPIPS than JPEG, FeatureAlloc-FAST, and random token selection across a wide range of SNRs. |
