This report presents an analytical framework to quantify the benefits of Predictive (Self-Healing) Restoration in optical networks. We model and compare four representative schemes: (A) manual repair and service re-creation after failures, (B) conventional reactive restoration triggered after failure detection, (C) conventional 1+1 protection with fully redundant resources, and (D) predictive self-healing restoration based on failure anticipation and make-before-break reconfiguration. Two key performance metrics are analyzed: Expected Annual Downtime and Expected Annual Total Cost, which jointly capture service availability, operational expenditure. We derive closed-form expressions for downtime and cost under each scheme as functions of failure rate, protection overhead, and proactive path availability. The analysis reveals the fundamental tradeoffs among the four schemes and identifies operating regions where predictive self-healing restoration outperforms both reactive restoration and 1+1 protection. In particular, predictive restoration significantly reduces downtime without incurring the persistent capacity overhead of protection schemes, offering a favorable balance between availability and cost. |
