User-Attribute-Based Analysis of Acceptance of Content Provenance Presentation for Countering Dis/Misinformation

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Content provenance technologies that attach verifiable information such as content origin and editing history have attracted attention as a countermeasure against dis/misinformation. This study conducted a web survey of 2,000 viewers of TV programs and video content under both everyday / emergency scenarios, and examined the relationships between acceptance of content provenance presentation (sense of reassurance, preference for provenance-attached content, and display requirements) and user attributes as well as behavioral tendencies to take some action when encountering dis/misinformation. In addition to exploratory stratified analyses by IT-related work/education experience and age groups, we examined associations between primary media use in everyday settings (TV vs. social media) and trusted information sources and response behaviors in emergencies. We then performed logistic regression analyses using user attributes, media use, and response behaviors as independent variables and acceptance measures as dependent variables. The results suggest that acceptance may vary not only by user attributes but also in connection with response behaviors. Since provenance information does not substitute for truth verification but rather supports users’ judgment by presenting verifiable provenance, our findings provide baseline evidence for designing both what to present and how to present it.
