This study aims to improve the speed and power efficiency of data compression in a visual cortex stimulation-based artificial vision system. Run-Length Exponential-Golomb Coding (RLE-EGC) were used as the data compression method. In the conventional C language implementation of RLE, the number of executed instructions was excessive, and limited both real-time performance and energy efficiency. To address this issue, we designed custom instructions and a custom accelerator using RISC-V custom extensions to execute a portion of the encoding process in hardware. Experimental results demonstrated that the executed instruction count and execution cycle count were significantly reduced compared to the conventional software implementation, achieving improved processing performance and reduced power consumption suitable for the artificial vision system. |
