Job Scheduling in Wide-Area Distributed Computing Infrastructures with Awareness of Distributed Cache Information

(in English) In wide-area distributed infrastructures for AI training, remote data access over wide-area networks increases GPU idle time and becomes a major bottleneck for training performance.Distributed caching, where the same data is placed across multiple sites, is an effective approach to address this issue.To maximize its benefit, jobs that use the same data need to be executed repeatedly at sites where the data is already cached.
This paper proposes a job scheduling method that takes distributed cache information into account.The key feature of the proposed method is the introduction of a static constraint, called cache-permitted sites, instead of directly handling dynamically changing cache contents at each site.Cache-permitted sites are defined as the set of sites where each dataset is allowed to be cached, and they are determined in advance based on dataset usage.The scheduler assigns training jobs only to sites where caching of the required datasets is permitted.As a result, jobs using the same datasets are concentrated at a limited number of sites, which suppresses redundant cache placement across sites.
Furthermore, by considering only statically defined information, the cache system and the scheduler can be implemented in a loosely coupled manner.
We implemented the proposed method on Kubernetes and evaluated it in a wide-area distributed environment between Tokyo and Okinawa connected by IOWN APN.The results show that the proposed method reduces the total execution time of an AI training workload by 15%.
