This study examined which feature distances relative to a reference performance could reflect the ranking of judging results (Gold, Silver, Bronze) for a set of recorded performances of the same piece in the All Japan Band Competition. Using the Gold Prize-winning performance in each category as the reference source, we calculated reference distances based on chroma vectors and layer-wise embeddings from the self-supervised music expression model MERT (MERT-v1-95M). To correct for temporal shifts caused by tempo differences between performances, we performed dynamic time warping (DTW) using chroma vectors and defined the average cosine distance between MERT embeddings based on these aligned correspondences as the reference distance. Evaluation was conducted by determining the binary classification accuracy for predicting that ‘a performance closer to the reference will receive a higher award’ for comparison pairs consisting of the reference performance and two other performances. Results showed that MERT's second and thirteenth layers achieved high accuracy in Gold–Bronze comparisons, suggesting that reference distance can effectively compare performances with larger award gaps. |
