Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) A cloud-native nature of highly softwarized network functions play a key role in AI-driven next generation network slicing. Cloud-native Network Functions (CNFs) base on layered abstraction on commodity servers, resulting in superior developability and manageability. On the other hand, current CNFs have inefficiency issues related to packet forwarding. Packet
transfer involving memory copy between the guest (VM or container) and the host environment is the bottleneck in performance, and various zero-copying approachs have been proposed to remove this bottleneck. However, embodying a zero-copying approach
violates system layers, and degrades system security and manageability. Hence, improving the efficiency of packet copying merits detailed consideration. In this paper, we analyze the effect of packet copying on forwarding efficiency of CNFs. The result showed that a true cause of performance degradation was in CPU cache usage related to packet copying.
