Accuracy enhancement of ultrasound viscoelastic evaluation using shear wave propagation speed

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Shear wave elastography in ultrasound diagnosis is a technology for evaluating tissue elasticity by measuring the propagation speed of shear waves generated by an acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI). The shear wave speed (SWS) is estimated from ultrasound images continuously acquired following ARFI excitation. However, in viscous tissues, SWS is influenced not only by elasticity but also by viscosity and the frequency of the shear wave. Therefore, the true tissue elasticity cannot be evaluated using SWS alone. By acquiring the frequency characteristics of SWS and fitting them to an appropriate viscoelastic model, both elastic and viscous properties can be simultaneously evaluated from the model parameters. In this study, a system was constructed in which shear waves, propagating as plane waves, are generated within a viscoelastic phantom stored in a divided container by exciting only one half of the container. The SWS in the phantom is measured from ultrasound images acquired from above the phantom. By exciting the phantom with burst waves at a single frequency, the SWS at each frequency can be accurately measured, and the detailed frequency characteristics of the SWS are obtained. Furthermore, by fitting the frequency characteristics to a standard linear solid model, the elasticity and viscosity of the phantom were evaluated.
