Image Evaluation of a Whole-Body Whole Gamma Imaging System Using a Body Phantom

Whole gamma imaging (WGI) is a new nuclear medicine imaging method that combines PET and Compton imaging technologies. We have previously developed and evaluated small-animal-sized prototypes. In this study, we designed a clinical WGI system for human whole-body imaging. We evaluated the image quality characteristics of PET and Compton imaging through simulations using a body phantom containing $^{89}text{Zr}$. The results showed that 10 mm spheres were clearly visualized in the PET images. Conversely, in Compton images, distinguishing spheres of 22 mm or smaller was difficult due to the degradation of spatial resolution and increased noise resulting from the enlarged aperture. However, spheres of 28 mm or larger yielded contrast comparable to that of PET. These results demonstrate that, although Compton imaging presents lower image quality, it allows for the acquisition of information from different nuclides in addition to PET, offering a promising outlook for simultaneous multi-functional imaging. |
