Investigation of discrimination of pitch and tone-height for vowels and words

(in English) Pitch perception has been studied in terms of pitch discrimination thresholds based on overtone and harmonic structures, as well as timbral differences arising from variations in spectral centroid. In many studies, pure tones and harmonic complex tones have been used as experimental stimuli, and few studies have investigated pitch using speech sounds. In this paper, we investigate the pitch discrimination characteristics of Japanese vowels, nasals, and words by varying the fundamental frequency and spectral envelope of both self-produced and other-produced speech. In the experiments, the pre-modified speech was presented as the standard stimulus and the post-modified speech as the comparison stimulus, and participants were asked to judge the pitch of the comparison relative to the standard by selecting from three options: lower, same, or higher. The results showed that, in both pitch discrimination and timbral pitch discrimination, correct response rates were higher for lower pitches than for higher pitches. Furthermore, in pitch discrimination, discrimination characteristics similar to those observed with pure tones and harmonic complex tones were confirmed for speech stimuli with fundamental frequency changes exceeding ±4 Hz.
