Experimental Evaluation of Maximum Likelihood Receiver Using Measured Data of Underwater Acoustic Communication
Nozomu Akuzawa, Kazuhiko Fukawa (Tokyo Tech) RCS2025-283
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Underwater acoustic (UWA) communications suffer from significantly degraded transmission performance due to Doppler shifts and multipaths with long delay time. To compensate for this degradation, a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) maximum likelihood (ML) based receiver for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been proposed. By introducing a basis expansion model (BEM) into adaptive array antennas, the preprocessor of the ML-based receiver alleviates time variations of the time-varying channels. Furthermore, signal components of which delay time exceeds the guard interval (GI) can be also suppressed by adaptive array combining. The outputs of the array combiners are fed into an ML-based signal detector that exploits signal components with the delay time being not greater than GI and that is followed by a channel decoder to improve the reliability of detected information bits. However, performance of the ML-based receiver has been evaluated by only computer simulations, and its experimental evaluations in actual UWA communication environments have not been conducted yet. Therefore, this report aims to demonstrate that the MIMO-OFDM ML receiver can operate well even in the actual environments by using experimental data of UWA communications.
Since the transmission parameters of the OFDM signal used in a subsea experiment were fixed and unchangeable, channel parameters including delay time, Doppler frequency, initial phase, and amplitude of the propagation paths are firstly estimated by using pilot signals. On the basis of these estimates, computer simulations are conducted to verify the operation of the ML receiver and to optimize the OFDM transmission parameters.
