Data Analysis and Visualization of DNS Water Torture Attacks

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) A DNS water torture attack is a technique that degrades the overall availability of DNS services by generating a large number of non-existent subdomain names and continuously querying authoritative DNS servers, thereby disabling the caching function of caching DNS servers. In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of attack traffic using log data of DNS water torture attacks collected from an open resolver operated as a honeypot, and constructed a system to store the data in a relational database. Furthermore, we developed and publicly released a web application for data analysis, implementing visualization features such as time-series graphs, heat maps, and data tables.
Analysis of more than 100 million records collected over approximately one month revealed that 77% of the attacks were automated, occurring at intervals of less than one second; that 60% of the source IP addresses targeted only a single domain, while 12.4% attacked six or more domains, indicating a multi-target attack pattern; that organized attack behaviors were observed, including concentrated attacks on seven Japanese energy-related companies and attacks against multiple domains from specific subnets; and that hosting services in Europe—such as those in Germany, Bulgaria, and the United Kingdom—were being abused as attack infrastructures.
