Development of a quantitative method for evaluating red blood cell aggregation size based on ultrasonic backscatter characteristics

(in English) We proposed a noninvasive and quantitative method for estimating red blood cell (RBC) aggregate size using backscatter analysis. However, uncertainty in size estimation due to blood attenuation correction errors was an issue. In this study, a propagation-medium substitution method was introduced for robust attenuation measurement, and the particle size and RBC aggregate size were estimated for a blood-mimicking phantom and human dorsal hand vein, respectively. The estimated size in the phantom was close to the true value, and different sizes were estimated in vivo, reflecting changes in RBC aggregation between at rest and during avascularization.
