This paper investigates emotion estimation in conversational speech using sound quality metrics based on auditory perception. While conventional emotion recognition studies mainly rely on acoustic features such as mel-spectrograms and fundamental frequency, human emotion perception is also influenced by perceptual sound qualities such as loudness and temporal fluctuation. In this study, we analyze whether sound quality metrics capture emotion-related characteristics in large-scale emotional speech data and whether they are effective for emotion estimation. Specifically, we focus on the IEMOCAP emotional speech corpus, which consists of acted and spontaneous dyadic conversations, and extract sound quality metrics including loudness, sharpness, roughness, fluctuation strength, and tonality for each utterance. These metrics are analyzed based on the Valence–Arousal–Dominance (VAD) representation, and regression analyses are conducted to estimate continuous VAD values from the sound quality metrics. The results show that sound quality metrics are associated with emotional dimensions, with particularly strong relevance to the arousal dimension. These findings suggest that sound quality metrics can serve as effective features for capturing continuous psychological aspects of emotion, especially emotional intensity, in conversational speech. |
