Wireless communication protocols such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are more susceptible to cyberattacks, including denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, than wired communication due to their characteristic that communication is possible whenever radio signals are within range. For Wi-Fi access points, a known DoS attack involves exhausting the available simultaneous connection slots and impersonating the MAC address of an existing legitimate device to send connection requests, thereby preventing that device from reconnecting. In this paper, we apply this attack method to a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) environment and, taking into account BLE-specific security functions, investigate a DoS attack against IoT gateways in which legitimate devices are continuously prevented from connecting by exhausting the available pairing slots. |
