In the forthcoming 6G era, the proliferation of new use cases like eXtended Reality (XR) and large-scale digital twins poses a critical challenge of increased power consumption within the Radio Access Network (RAN). This rise is driven by wider bandwidths, advanced Massive MIMO systems, the use of millimeter-wave and sub-terahertz bands, and high-density base station deployments. Deployed in large numbers, Radio Units (RUs) are particularly significant contributors, accounting for a substantial portion of the RAN’s total power consumption. The O-RAN ALLIANCE, which promotes RAN virtualization and openness, is exploring use cases for RAN control, including flexible radio control from a RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) to enhance power efficiency. This paper proposes a dynamic transmission bandwidth control method that leverages the RIC to reduce RU power consumption under low-traffic conditions. A preliminary evaluation, which narrowed the RU’s transmission bandwidth in response to the downlink traffic load, confirms that a power saving of approximately 1 W can be achieved through this method. |
