With the rapid advancement of mobile communication systems toward higher data rates and larger capacities, compact power amplifiers (PAs) capable of wideband and high-efficiency operation are increasingly required. Harmonic control is an effective approach for improving efficiency, and continuous-mode PAs, which maintain harmonic control over a wide frequency range, have recently attracted considerable attention. To reduce circuit size, harmonic control circuits primarily based on one-port composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission lines have been proposed. However, separating the circuits responsible for harmonic control and fundamental matching limits the achievable operating bandwidth. In this paper, a novel design methodology is proposed in which both harmonic control and fundamental matching are simultaneously realized within a harmonic control circuit composed of a one-port CRLH transmission line and a harmonic trap filter. A PA using a 10-W GaN HEMT is designed and fabricated, and experimental results demonstrate high-efficiency operation with a DE exceeding 70% over the 1.6–2.4 GHz frequency band, thereby confirming the effectiveness of the proposed approach. |
