5G Control Plane Congestion Mitigation by Pre-slice Priority Control and AMF Delay Analysis
Izzy Nha, Akihiro Nakao (UTokyo) NS2025-315
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) With the rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, control plane congestion caused by massive simultaneous connections has emerged as a critical challenge that degrades the availability and robustness of 5G core networks.
This study proposes a selective connection control mechanism that prevents control plane collapse and maintains connectivity for high-priority User Equipment (UE) during the initial registration phase, referred to as the pre-slice stage, where slice information is not yet available. Specifically, we introduce a method that combines early priority control with multi-threaded processing within the Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF).
The novelty of this work lies in mitigating congestion through early priority assignment at the Pre-slice stage, while decomposing and visualizing the total connection time, which is defined as the duration from the initiation of a UE connection request to the completion of Packet Data Unit (PDU) session establishment, using telemetry analysis.
The analysis reveals that the primary cause of control plane latency is not the internal computational processing of the AMF, but the waiting time associated with inter-Network Function (NF) communication. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly reduces these communication stalls, achieving a maximum reduction of 90.16% in the average total connection time for high-priority UEs, while improving CPU utilization by approximately 22% through more efficient use of computational resources. These results indicate that the proposed approach effectively enhances the robustness of 5G core networks by optimizing communication latency and resource utilization.
