Dynamic Computation Resource Allocation and Slice-Switching Control for High-Efficiency Network Slicing in O-RAN

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) architectures have enabled the virtualization of base station functions and flexible control on general-purpose servers, raising a pressing issue of reducing the power consumption of increasingly complex network resources.
In particular, in a network-slicing environment, deactivating slices or shutting down computational resources to save power consumption involves a trade-off, as it can make it difficult to meet throughput requirements specified in Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
In this paper, we propose a dynamic computation resource allocation method that maximizes energy efficiency (EE), defined as the ratio of throughput to power consumption.
To achieve this, we formulate a mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem in which the decision variables are the number of CPU units allocated to each slice and the slice activation status.
By applying linearization and constraint relaxation, we transform the MINLP into a fractional programming problem and further reformulate it as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem using Dinkelbach's method.
We also propose an approximate solution method that iteratively searches for solutions to the reformulated MILP.
Simulation results show that the proposed method adaptively controls resources in response to demand fluctuations, achieving both the maintenance of throughput requirements and the reduction of power consumption.
