IEEE 802.11ah is expected to be a promising technology for IoT applications due to its ability to easily build IP communication networks over a wide communication area. Its application in suburban and mountainous areas is currently being considered. However, due to carrier sensing interference from other wireless devices and a transmission time limit of 10% per hour, special consideration is required for its use in continuous communications such as video. Utilizing 802.11ah in urban areas raises concerns about reduced transmission throughput due to the presence of other similar devices and LPWA communications using the same 920 MHz band. In this paper, we investigate the communication distance and the characteristics of two 802.11ah communication devices in relation to the communication time limit, using central Tokyo as an example, in preparation for the application of 802.11ah to video communications. We also measure the temporal fluctuations in communication conditions and the impact on throughput. To enable continuous video transmission in this environment, we constructed a video streaming environment incorporating MPEG-DASH variable bit rate (ABR) and confirmed that video transmission was possible at speeds of 400 Kbps even in high-noise environments. |
