This paper proposes a nonlinear adaptive control method for feedback active noise control (FBANC) by introducing reservoir computing (RC). Conventional FBANC based on linear adaptive filters is computationally efficient but suffers from limited performance under nonlinear and nonstationary noise conditions, while deep-learning-based ANC faces difficulties in real-time implementation due to high computational cost and offline training requirements.
In this study, the FBANC controller is replaced with an echo state network (ESN), which maps the error signal into a high-dimensional nonlinear state space and generates the control signal through a linear readout. To address diverse noise dynamics, several ESN architectures, including single, stride-based parallel, linear-branch-assisted, and hierarchical ESNs, are designed.
Simulation results using sinusoidal signals and real environmental noise demonstrate that the proposed ESN-based methods outperform the conventional FxNLMS algorithm in terms of noise reduction performance under nonstationary conditions, while indicating that computational cost during online learning remains a challenge for real-time implementation. |
