Development of a Free-Viewpoint Video Generation for Open Surgery

(in English) Surgical video serves as a pivotal resource for skill acquisition in surgical education. However, open surgery frequently suffers from visual occlusions caused by the surgeon's head and arms, which hinders the acquisition of optimal educational video. To address this issue, this paper proposes a method for generating free-viewpoint video using multi-view images acquired by cameras positioned between the surgeon and the surgical field. While prior research has reported the generation of top-down video using a 16-view system, such approaches were limited by image quality degradation and viewpoint constraints stemming from insufficient viewpoint density. Consequently, this study attempts to generate high-quality free-viewpoint video by constructing a novel multi-view camera system equipped with 32 cameras to increase the density of visual information, in conjunction with the application of 3D Gaussian Splatting.
