The realization of sustainable logistics and regional transportation services requires automated driving technologies, which in turn demand highly reliable and low-latency communications in mobile networks that support them. This paper first discusses the technical challenges associated with existing mobile network architectures in achieving high-reliability and low-latency Vehicle-to-Network (V2N) communications for automated driving. Next, it provides an overview of Segment Routing IPv6 for the Mobile User Plane (SRv6 MUP) as an enabling technology that can overcome these challenges at an early stage, along with a discussion of its expected benefits in practical deployment environments. Furthermore, as part of ongoing efforts toward the early realization of highly reliable and low-latency V2N communications, this paper presents a field trial of low-latency Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) access using SRv6 MUP.
Experimental results obtained from a commercial network environment on a shared section of the Shin-Tomei Expressway, where ordinary vehicles are in operation, demonstrate the latency reduction effect of SRv6 MUP for V2N communications utilizing MEC. |
