A study of LDPC coding and iterative decoding in dual-layer HAMR

(in English) To achieve ultra-high-density HDDs (hard disk drives), we are developing signal processing for dual-layer HAMR (head-assisted magnetic recording) with dual recording layers on one side of the HDD. In this report, we assumed an areal recording density of 2 Tbits/inch² per layer and adopted LDPC (low-density parity-check) coding and iterative decoding after 3B-2T (3 binary-2 ternary) coding. The 3B-2T code suppresses the frequency and number of “0” in the ternary sequence. Furthermore, we realize gray coding of the 3B-2T code to suppress error propagation. It is clarified that this system achieves error-free performance at an SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) of 24 dB.
