Ad Hoc Networking of Associated Clients and Serving-AP Selection for AP Mobility Control in Infrastructure Multi-Hop AP Networks

(in English) In this study, we propose and evaluate a control method for a system that accommodates user devices by using a Wi-Fi ad hoc network as a public infrastructure. The proposed method jointly optimizes ①the formation of the terminal ad hoc network, ②the selection of the serving (associated) AP for each terminal, and ③the movement of APs to their optimal locations. By flexibly constructing an appropriate terminal ad hoc network according to various terminal spatial distributions (spatial dispersion) and moving APs to optimal connection positions for that ad hoc network, the system throughput is improved.
This control problem requires the simultaneous consideration of three factors—①the ad hoc connection topology among terminals, ②AP movement positions, and ③terminal-to-AP association selection. Because these factors are mutually dependent (a “chicken-and-egg” relationship), the resulting combinatorial optimization problem is NP-hard. To address this issue, we adopt a heuristic approach in SAP-CAMP: assuming that ① and ② are near-optimal, we first optimize ③; then, assuming that ③ is near-optimal, we optimize ① and ②. This procedure is repeated iteratively. For optimizing ① and ②, we employ the conventional fixed-association optimization method CAMP. Simulation results show that SAP-CAMP achieves up to a 50% throughput improvement compared with CAMP, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed method.
