This report focuses on millimeter-wave (mmWave) relay systems in complex urban environments, such as those envisioned for Beyond 5G. The objective is to deploy unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) relays optimally in terms of both the coverage area and the limited number of UAV relays. Although mmWave mobile communications enable high bit-rate transmission, they suffer from severe signal attenuation and extremely small cell radii, which requires the deployment of relays.
To estimate the optimal locations of the UAV relays while minimizing their total number, the proposed method firstly identifies low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions within a cell at low cost. For this purpose, the proposed scheme exploits information on multipaths at observation points obtained by ray tracing. The UAV relays are allocated so efficiently and optimally that they can increase the received power in those low SNR regions to more than a predefined threshold.
Specifically, combining the proposed SNR estimation method with a greedy algorithm-based optimal allocation of relays enables the system to reduce the computational complexity required for the ray tracing and to search for the optimal positions of the relays while accounting for physical propagation characteristics such as rigorous Line-of-Sight (LOS) information, reflection, and diffraction. Furthermore, when the initial positions for the greedy algorithm are obtained from rigorous LOS analyses, the method can avoid falling into local optima and can reduce the overall running time.
It is shown that the proposed scheme is superior in terms of both complexity and improvement in the coverage, to a conventional combination of relay allocation optimization based on the free-space path loss model and antenna directionality one. |
