A Method of Free-Viewpoint Image Generation for 360-Degree Cameras via Adapted Ray Generation

(in English) Free viewpoint images is a technology that generates novel viewpoints from images captured around a subject. Free viewpoint images are generated from cameras placed around the subject, so the number of cameras required many cameras (tens to thousands). Although introduction of 360-degree cameras may be a potential solution to overcome this barrier, it generates a new challenge presentation power in the outward-facing region. In this paper defines two types of imaging areas. One is the "inward-facing region", where the cameras are directed toward a central subject. The other is "outward-facing region", which represents the space expanding outside the camera rig. In the outward-facing region, it is very difficult to generate free viewpoint images because the number of intersection points and the number of rays is significantly lower than those in the inward-facing region. This sparsity of geometric information often leads to degraded image quality in the synthesized views.
In this paper, we propose a novel ray generation method based on the DS (Double Sphere) camera model to generate free viewpoint images from two intersecting regions. Consequently, it aims to generate high-precision free viewpoint images from 360-degree cameras.
