The Effect of the Visual Appearance of Avatar Hands in Virtual Reality on the Out of Body Experience

(in English) Out-of-body experiences reported in psychiatric disorders provide important insights into the mechanisms underlying human bodily self-consciousness. In cognitive science, related phenomena such as the full-body illusion have been extensively studied. Previous study has suggested that a similar experience can be induced in the upper limb by presenting, within a virtual reality environment, the virtual hand that moves synchronously with the participant’s real hand along with the translucent ghost hand. In the present study, we conducted a behavioral experiment to investigate the effects of visual appearance
of the virtual hand and transparency of the ghost hand on the sense of out-of-body experience. Subjective reports and changes in movement were analyzed to assess these effects.
