This study aims to elucidate the relationship between a common property among various species in interval timing and the performance of interval timing models. Imprecise interval timing of animals is known to exhibit a scalar invariance property: the distribution of the relative deviation of generated interval is invariant regardless of the target interval. Since the scalar invariance is observed across multiple animal species, it is hypothesized that this may represent an evolutionary optimization for survival. Considering multiple interval timing models with the same mechanism as the models proposed to reproduce scalar invariance, we examined whether the scalar invariance optimizes timing accuracy. The results demonstrate that among all proposed mechanisms, some models consistently outperform those replicating scalar invariance, confirming that at least in terms of timing accuracy, these models do not represent optimized solutions. |
