The Effects of Familiar and Unfamiliar Musics on Concentration During Works

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This study aimed to examine how prior listening experience (familiarity) with music affects concentration during a task. Participants performed single-digit arithmetic tasks (addition, subtraction, and multiplication) for one minute while their EEG was recorded from eight electrodes. Three auditory conditions were used: (A) silence, (B) unfamiliar music (an orchestral piece generated by AI), and (C) familiar music (music selected by the participant). Each condition was conducted three times. Stimuli were presented via the same pair of earphones worn in both ears, and the earphones were also worn during the silent condition. The volume was adjusted by each participant to a level they perceived as optimal.

For analysis, we focused on the temporal electrodes T7 and T8, and compared conditions using features extracted from the envelope of beta-band (13–30 Hz) activity. As a behavioral measure, accuracy (percentage of correct responses) was calculated. Statistical analyses were performed using the Friedman test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test with Bonferroni correction. In preliminary results (n = 5), no statistically significant differences were found among conditions for either the beta-band indices or accuracy, although slight differences in the mean values were observed. Further verification will be conducted with a larger sample size.
