A Z-Score-Based Rank-Attack Mitigation Method for RPL Networks

(in English) RPL (IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks) is an IETF-standardized routing protocol for
LLNs (Low-Power and Lossy Networks) composed of resource-constrained devices. Due to limited computational capability,
memory, and energy resources, conventional security mechanisms are often difficult to apply directly in such networks. Rank
attacks pose a serious threat because an adversary can falsify rank information to attract traffic and disrupt routing topology.
Existing defenses against rank attacks monitor changes in neighboring nodes’ rank values. However, these methods cannot
effectively handle cooperative rank attacks, in which multiple malicious nodes manipulate the perceived average rank to evade
detection. Moreover, their operation can degrade network stability and reduce the packet delivery ratio (PDR).
To address these issues, we propose a filtering approach that considers statistical distribution of neighboring nodes’rank values
and employs Z-score normalization to identify and exclude outliers during parent selection. Simulation-based evaluations
demonstrate that the proposed method maintains a high attack avoidance rate while significantly mitigating PDR degradation.
