Recognition Method for Continuous Air-Written Hiragana Characters

(in English) Air writing is the act of writing characters in the air using one's fingertip. This paper proposes a method for recognizing hiragana characters written consecutively in the air. Specifically， we first extract fingertip trajectories from video using MediaPipe. Next， we segment the fingertip trajectories into individual characters using an LSTM， and then classify each segmented trajectory into a hiragana class using another LSTM. In experiments， when each row of the 46 hiragana syllables (e.g., “あいうえお”, “わをん”) was written in the air， and when frequently used Japanese words (e.g., “あたま”, “わらい”) were written in the air， the proposed method achieved recognition accuracy of approximately 70% for the written character sequences.
