In this study, we examine design methods for multi-level coded modulation (MLC) systems that are based on polar codes. The Gaussian approximation (GA) and the reciprocal channel approximation (RCA) are two low-complexity polar code design methods for binary AWGN channels. The GA is based on the mean of bit-channel log-likelihood ratios, while the RCA is based on the mutual information of those channels. Nevertheless, the application of these methods to nonuniform channels, such as those encountered by the bits of multilevel modulation symbols, can result in a substantial performance degradation due to model mismatch. Consequently, we first examine an RCA-based design method that is based on the modification of design SNR for the scenario in which all levels are decoded by successive cancellation decoding (SCD) at the receiver. Moreover, through numerical simulations, we demonstrate that there is potential for enhancement in the selection of the design SNR when the decoder of the lowest level channel at the receiver is replaced by a more powerful decoding algorithm. |
