Evaluation of Physical Reservoir Properties in Biological and Non-biological Convective Phenomena

(in English) This study focused on fluid phenomena in both biological and non-biological systems, investigating the potential to utilize the collective motion of Euglena and convection phenomena in miso soup as reservoir computing. We analyzed the time-series responses of each system to inputs such as light stimulation and heating conditions, and evaluated computational capabilities related to nonlinearity and short-term memory using performance metrics in prediction tasks. The results confirmed that reservoir computing in Euglena exhibited transitions in internal states in response to input changes and retention of input history, suggesting it could function as a physical reservoir under limited conditions. Conversely, reservoir computing in miso soup did not yield sufficient predictive performance under the experimental conditions tested, indicating that improvements in measurement methods and input design are required for future work.
