Corpus Saving Control Based on Control-Flow Graph Exploration in Fuzzing

(in English) Fuzzing is widely used as an automated testing technique to assess software security. It discovers bugs and vulnerabilities by automatically generating inputs and repeatedly executing a program. A representative approach, Coverage-guided Fuzzing (CGF), systematically explores a program’s control-flow graph based on coverage information. In CGF, inputs that reach previously unseen states in the control-flow graph are stored in a corpus as seeds, and the fuzzer repeatedly mutates them to explore neighboring states.
In this study, we assume that seeds that can expand the explored region more widely are more promising, and estimate the promise of each seed based on how thoroughly its input has explored the control-flow graph. Based on this estimate, we propose a method that preferentially retains seeds judged to be promising in the corpus. Our evaluation shows that, compared with AFL++, which is widely used in practice, the proposed method achieves higher coverage in a shorter time on multiple benchmarks.
