Estimating Cognitive Confusion States from EEG During Computational Tasks

(in English) This study aims to elucidate the electroencephalographic (EEG) characteristics of the "confusion" state during the execution of computational tasks. In the experiment, participants performed mental arithmetic tasks with incrementally manipulated difficulty levels. Band power analysis was conducted on common independent components extracted via Independent Component Analysis (ICA).The results revealed a significant increase in parietal alpha power as task difficulty intensified, reflecting heightened internal concentration. A comparison based on response outcomes (Answered vs. Timeout) suggested a decrease in frontotemporal theta activity during timeout trials. Furthermore, when timeout trials were categorized based on subjective reports, trials where participants "continued thinking" exhibited a trend of higher sustained parieto-occipital theta power compared to trials where they "gave up." These findings suggest that a state of confusion may be characterized by a reduction in frontal theta power, coupled with the maintenance of parieto-occipital theta and an increase in parietal alpha power.
