A Study on Learning-based Image Quality Improvement in Large-Étendue Direct-View Holographic Displays

(in English) Holographic displays offer an ultimate solution for direct-view 3D experiences by reconstructing the full light wavefront, but achieving both a large screen size and wide viewing freedom has been a long-standing challenge due to the limitations of the spatial-bandwidth product. We present a direct-view holographic display system that addresses this issue by combining an amplitude-only LCD panel with ultra-high pixel count and dynamic optical steering. By axially translating a lens, our system expands the eye box in depth, enabling flexible viewing distances and going beyond the capabilities of conventional eye-tracking based methods. Furthermore, we introduce a learning-based wave propagation model to compensate for the discrepancies between simulation and the real optical system, thereby improving the final image quality. This paper reports on our proposed system and its initial experimental results, which pave the way for scalable, high-quality holographic displays with expanded viewing freedom.
