Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Geometric construction is a fundamental component of mathematics in schools, which tests students’ understanding of geometric properties, and logical thinking ability to organize problem-solving processes. Assessment of geometric construction requires students to follow correct procedural steps; however, the construction process itself is not directly observable in traditional paper-based examinations, making it difficult to assess whether the correct steps have been applied. In contrast, electronic pen-and-paper systems have the capacity to record comprehensive stroke histories, thereby overcoming this limitation and facilitating integration of automated grading. We designed an electronic compass that replaces the pencil and needle of a real compass with a digital stylus pen and needle, allowing students to solve geometric problems in the same way they would with a real compass on paper, as opposed to using a mouse to navigate dynamic geometry software. This study focuses on an automatic method for scoring answers produced with this compass in geometric construction problems, given the challenges arising from fragmented compass strokes, mixed drawing order of compass, pencil, and eraser strokes, and variations in individual construction strategies. The proposed method leverages the temporal order of strokes to segment and group fragmented inputs, reconstructing individual arcs to extract key geometric features, including centers, radii, and intersection points. By analyzing the temporal relationships between these features and subsequent drawing actions, the method evaluates whether the prescribed procedures are correctly followed.
